Bodycam Footage Captures Shootout Between Bakersfield Police Officers & Suspect

Bakersfield, California — The Bakersfield Police Department released body camera footage of an incident under investigation, which involved an officer and a suspect who exchanged gunfire. On June 13th at 3:45 AM, the Bakersfield Police Department received a report that an adult male suspect had brandished a handgun at a convenience store clerk in the 2300 block of Panama Lane. The suspect then fled the business in a silver Mazda van with purple rims. A two-officer patrol unit was dispatched to the business and located a silver Mazda van in the area with purple rims. A man standing next to the vehicle matched the description of the suspect who was armed with the handgun. The suspect fires shots while officers were in the car.
Police returned fire while the suspect was running. Both officers attempted to find the suspect and ultimately spotted him under a car. Medical aid was summoned to the scene due to a complaint of chest pain from the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Robert Vaughn of Lake Isabella. No one was struck by gunfire. The recovered firearm was determined to have been stolen during a vehicle burglary on June 11th, 2022. The vehicle Vaughn was occupying was determined to have been stolen on June 10th, 2022. After receiving medical treatment, Vaughn was booked into the Kern County Jail for two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, brandishing a firearm, felony evading and a pre-existing Post Release Community Supervision violation warrant.
